Exercise, brain plasticity and cognitive aging pioneer Prof. Kirk Erickson joins The Unleash Health® Scientific Council

Unleash Health proudly welcomes Prof. Kirk Erickson, one of the world's leading pioneers in brain health, neuroplasticity, and cognitive aging to its Global Scientific Council.

Prof. Erickson is Director of Translational Neuroscience and the Mardian J. Blair Endowed Chair of Neuroscience at the AdventHealth Research Institute. Over the past two decades, he has led one of the world's most influential research programs investigating how physical activity, exercise, and lifestyle behaviors shape brain structure, cognitive function, and healthy neurobiological aging. His work has fundamentally changed our understanding of how the brain adapts throughout life, demonstrating that cognitive aging is not simply inevitable, but can be meaningfully influenced.

Widely regarded as a global leader in exercise neuroscience, Prof. Erickson's research has provided some of the strongest evidence that lifestyle interventions can physically remodel the aging brain. His landmark randomized clinical trials demonstrated that regular aerobic exercise increases hippocampal volume in older adults, improves memory performance, and supports brain plasticity, overturning the long-held assumption that age-related brain atrophy is irreversible. These discoveries have transformed how scientists, clinicians, and policymakers think about dementia prevention, cognitive resilience, and healthy aging.

Across more than 380 peer-reviewed publications, Prof. Erickson has combined randomized clinical trials, advanced neuroimaging, biomarker science, and mechanistic neuroscience to identify the biological pathways linking movement, cardiovascular fitness, and environmental factors with brain health across the lifespan.

In recognition of his scientific leadership, Prof. Erickson was appointed by the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services to the 2018 U.S. Physical Activity Guidelines Advisory Committee, where he chaired the Brain Health Subcommittee and helped establish the scientific foundation for national recommendations on physical activity and cognitive health. His research has been featured extensively in major international media, including The New York Times, CNN, BBC News, NPR, Time, and The Wall Street Journal.

On joining Unleash Health's Scientific Council, Dr. Erickson shared:

“I’m honored to lead the Cognition Span within the Unleash Health Global Scientific Council. Unleash Health’s comprehensive healthspan ontology and longitudinal brand-led behavioral platforms are an entirely new way to measure, understand and continuously improve cognitive health at population scale.“

Dr. Ramin Rafiei, Founder and CEO of Unleash Health, added:

"Kirk is the world's foremost scientist in exercise neuroscience and cognitive aging. His research fundamentally changed how we understand the relationship between physical activity and the human brain, demonstrating that everyday behaviors can reshape brain structure, strengthen memory, and improve long-term cognitive health. As healthy longevity increasingly depends on preserving cognitive resilience throughout life, Kirk's expertise is instrumental in bringing world-class neuroscience to life."
